He waseven more surprised that Naruto never gave uphope on being acknowledged as a person andultimately found friends who truly cared for him. Seeing the determination that Naruto had toprotect his friends made Gaara question his ownpath in life. Realising that he gave up too easily,Gaara decided to follow Naruto's path, wishing tobecome Kazekage of Sunagakure so he could beconnected to his people, and hopefully have them finally acknowledge his existence as a the next few years, Gaara's determinationto find happiness became apparent from hisdecision to rely on his own power rather thanhis inner demon's. Gaara eventually formed aclose friendship with Naruto. Since Gaara has become a close companion toNaruto, he has been able to change people'spersonalities towards him, such as Matsuri overpowering her fear of weapons, Ōnoki in the Five Kage Summit, persuaded practically thewhole shinobi nation as a team before the war,and even Naruto himself when reflecting uponwhat he will choose to do as Sasuke's friend. Thisseems to be a similar trait from Naruto, a way ofshowing how he has changed from he remained ruthless against hisopponents, Gaara appears extremely protectiveof his allies and innocent people, as seen whenhe protected his village from Deidara; and hissiblings, Darui and even the Raikage againstSasuke. He also appears to deeply understand those who have suffered from loneliness andhatred in the past by the look in their eyes, suchas Naruto, Kimimaro, and even a Kage, Gaara believes that the ideals of previous generations, that each village must mindtheir own business and solve their ownproblems without having to ask for the aid ofothers in order to keep appearance and honour,is a "ridiculous old-fashioned thinking" and thatcooperation between the villages is fundamental in order to defeat Akatsuki .
